How I Work

PSYCHOTHERAPY IN MIDTOWN NYC

My postgraduate training is in psychodynamic psychotherapy.  It has its roots in psychoanalysis, but is a less intensive method of working with someone.  In this type of therapy, the focus is on the way in which past experiences inform our present feelings and relationship patterns.  By examining thoughts, feelings, and beliefs through the lens of past experiences, we can understand them more clearly.  Areas of focus generally include current stressors or difficulties, past and present relationship patterns, early experiences, and the relationship between client and therapist.

This type of therapy works best when we meet at least once weekly and is generally a longer term type of treatment.

Though the bulk of my practice is comprised of people who see me on a longer-term basis, occasionally a client may wish to see me on a shorter term basis for a more specific problem.  In this case, I would provide a more time-limited, solution-focused approach.  Ultimately, how often we meet is up to you.

Getting Started

I generally like to have a brief (complementary) introductory phone consultation before scheduling an initial appointment in order to answer any initial questions you might have, and to get a sense of what is bringing you to see me.

At our first session I will ask you about what is bringing you to therapy, your history, what you hope to gain from therapy, and how we might best work together.  As I understand meeting a therapist for the first time may not be easy, I make every effort to create a comfortable and supportive space.
